Kaua`i, the northernmost of the four major Hawaiian islands, is also known as the “Garden Isle” for its lush beauty. It boasts Waimea Canyon, a 10-mile-long gorge that snakes through solid rock, and the Na Pali Coast, where towering cliffs meet the sea.

Kaua`i’s flower is the mokihana, a small native tree found only on Kaua`i that grows 15 to 20 feet tall and bears small, greenish flowers. Its seeds have a licorice fragrance and are often strung into leis with maile leaves. Early Hawaiians often stored tapa garments with mokihana leis because the licorice scent of the lei often lasts for years. The mokihana tree also bears a leathery fruit that can burn the skin.
